| KFA's Qualifications in BIM KFA has followed the evolution of intelligent building modeling technology for over a decade and is recognized as a subject matter expert in BIM. During the 1990's we developed academic programs using advanced modeling products, produced a Triforma white paper for Bentley Systems, evaluated the maturity and scalability of BIM systems for the Spallation Neutron Source project at Oak Ridge National Lab and assisted Revit Technology in market research and feature prioritization prior to their initial product release. As a member of the Autodesk Developer Network (ADN), KFA has access to all AutoCAD-based, Revit-based, Navisworks-based and Inventor-based software, including pre-release betas. KFA has worked with the Public Building Commission of Chicago and the Capital Development Board of Illinois to evaluate the feasibility of using BIM on public design and construction projects. KFA has assisted the National Institutes of Health in developing the Division 1 specification language to ensure that NIH would reap the cost and schedule benefits of BIM utilization during construction phase, and defined detailed BIM deliverables requirements to ensure that NIH would receive accurate, as-built BIM data that would be useful for long-range operations, maintenance and facility management activities. In September 2009, in a highly competitive, nationwide qualifications-based procurement, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), Public Buildings Service, Physical Capital Asset Management Division awarded KFA a five-year, $30 million Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract for Nationwide Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Related Professional Services. In 2010, KFA developed a customized BIM training course “BIM for Project Managers” for GSA Region 5. That course is now a nationwide resource for GSA BIM training. KFA is currently assisting the GSA PBS National Office of Design and Construction, Strategic Program Resources in developing a GSA BIM Guide for Facilities Management. Previous to the GSA BIM Guide project, KFA completed two projects successfully in the GSA Office of the Chief Architect’s 3D-4D-BIM Pilot Program. KFA provided BIM modeling services for the 18-story, 1.2 million square foot Richard Bolling Federal Office Building located in Kansas City, Missouri and the 30,000 SF Land Port of Entry facility located in Madawaska, Maine. Since 2006, KFA has been contracted by Walsh Healthcare Division to recommend BIM strategy and software as well as provide BIM and MEP trades coordination services to Walsh for four projects in four states, with four different teams, three different project delivery methods, and over 20 software products. Initially, KFA conducted a BIM pilot designed to evaluate the effectiveness of BIM in producing more constructible documentation. For the Pilot Project, Walsh engaged KFA to “shadow” the A/E of Record’s construction drawing process on a 61,000 square foot, design/build hospital addition. KFA created comprehensive 3D models based on the design team’s 2D CAD files at three milestones: 1) hand-over of the project to the design/ build team at the end of design development; 2) at 95% construction documents and 3) at 100% construction documents. KFA also provided to Walsh architectural and structural modeling services for a 650,000 square foot hospital project, merging our model with those produced by multiple MEP subcontractors and running interference checks. For this project, KFA set up a web-based collaboration system for model sharing and team communications. KFA has developed training curricula and conducted training in multiple BIM products. KFA was principal author of Autodesk Revit® Building 8 training curriculum and materials. KFA restructured the training curriculum for Autodesk Revit® Building Essentials and also the Advanced curriculum. As part of the documentation review, KFA verified all model sets used in each unit. The conventional training manuals were also reformatted and adapted for modified online versions of both training programs. KFA
has also developed our own training curricula for the Revit product
family. We began offering the Revit® Quickstart class
for architects in 2004 and in 2007 introduced Revit®
and NavisWork®: Quickstart for Contractors.
